"Nice location
The room was comfortable; the bed was REALLY comfortable. The view was splendid. Since the caretaker came in each day to leave our breakfast for the next morning, I wish they had also removed the trash bag and provided a fresh one. This would have prevented a mouse from being interested in what was in the waste basket. "

"Modest accommodation with outstanding views
The rooms themselves are very simple but incredibly clean and comfortable. The massive lanai that wraps around the building connecting each room was the highlight of our stay - we ate our meals out there watching the waves and the surfers nearby. The sunrises here are unreal - and being able to watch them from in the cozy king sized bed made them all the better. The breakfast was modest but delicious, and the staff were incredibly kind and helpful throughout our stay. The property is quiet and very private. Absolutely would stay here again and again."

"Amazing Ocean View but not perfect....
You can't get a better view-we really enjoyed it! Also, unit was clean and spacious; bed/bedding comfortalbe. However- cleaners used super strong chemicals that stunk terribly for several hours(including they dumped the bucket right in front of the windows and screen door and finally we figured that out and rinsed it off)AND it was hard to sleep bc it was so hot. Also- screen door wouldn't LOCK and that made me nervous the first night bc we HAD to keep it open to blow in fresh air."

"Nice place!
Nice place but location close to ocean makes materials and furnishings age/wear quickly. Could use some Roman shades on lanais (for intense morning sun) and some overall improvements/updating. Still nice and had a great time though"

"Quiet, Peaceful Hilo Escape
We enjoyed our stay at Hale Kai. We watched the sunrise each morning while enjoying the light breakfast provided. It was perfect for our time in Hilo. The location is convenient to Hilo, Akaka Falls, Tropical Botanical Gardens, Rainbow Falls, Volcanoes National Park. The property was clean and we enjoyed the pool. If you want a quiet getaway overlooking Hilo Bay, this is the place!"

"Breathtaking view
This is the second time we've stay at this location, just a different room. The view is amazing. We love the quaint atmosphere which is relaxing. The location is only 2 miles from downtown Hilo. We also love the breakfast items provided, our favorite is the local fruits. The staff that comes and replenishes the breakfast items are always nice, friendly and extremely helpful when we need anything. We will be staying again next year, but will probably try a different room. The only issue was trying to maneuver our luggage down the stairs and back up the stairs to our room, that can be a bit challenging. "

"Zero privacy
To get any airflow into this room you have to open the curtains and if you open the curtains, it’s look right on to the walkway, so zero privacy. Tv is tiny and they need to check remote operation. Otherwise it’s a nice location. "

"Amazing views and relaxing vibes
We had an incredible stay. The room was quite spacious, the bed was very comfortable, the breakfast was delicious. We loved the sunrise wake ups each morning and falling asleep to the ocean waves and salt breeze. The tropical vibes of all the floral and greenery around the place helped make it more and more like paradise found! We only stayed a couple of days because we opted to try both sides of the island for the different "vibes" but we were actually disappointed to leave and try something else because we knew it couldn't be "better"!!! It was nice to stay somewhere without the touristy feel. We highly recommend and would for sure return for another stay!!!!!!!!! "

"Little sea-side bed and breakfast!!
This place was overall wonderful! What a great view! We loved sitting at our table in the mornings and eating our included breakfast. Which was great by the way. We really appreciated the plain Greek yogurt cups, and real hard boiled eggs and fresh fruit of papaya and pineapple the first day!! Having this included is a huge benefit and makes this place unique. Probably one of the best "included" breakfasts we have ever had and we travel alot. I wish the place felt a little more private. Others from the other 3 rooms can walk right past your sliding glass door, but there is nothing that can be changed about that. But you either have a view of the water or you have your privacy. So u have to just think about that when changing or getting out of the shower or laying in bed. Also, not sure if anything can be done about this, but it can get stuffie inside the room because there is no cross flow of air. I wondered if a dehumidifier could be a good investment for each room? Also, they have done a good job of refreshing the rooms and making them modern and the shower update was nice. There are a few spots that are still a bit old, but overall I think the rooms were fabulous. They also had everything you needed in terms of amenities inside, from wine glasses, to set of plates, coffee maker, microwave, etc. The common room was also a nice surprise for guests to place extra food that they couldn't eat and pass to others who could use it. We loved seeing whales from our view and enjoyed seeing the surfers in the bay from our space! The privacy walls they have set up too are a great amenity and help with the privacy. Overall, very quiet, beautiful, well- appointed place! "

"Perfect Weekend Getaway
The Moana Room at Hilo Hale Kai Suites was clean, stocked with all the simple necessities such as a coffee maker, refrigerator, and microwave. The breakfast provided each morning was an added bonus. We are from Oahu and used to humid conditions, so having the windows open at night and no AC was NO problem. We enjoyed hearing the sounds of the ocean and the coqui frogs. "

No air conditioning which we knew, but room very muggy. Lacked privacy. We had to pull heavy drapes across our screen door for privacy therefore blocking any air flow. Room was dark. Asked for ice and we were told not part of the contract. Had to buy our own. Nice view. Difficult to drag luggage into room ... have to go down a set of stairs and then up. Parking available but very tight.

Overall I enjoyed by stay. The location was ideal for our needs. Property is well kept and the rooms are very clean and neat. The only thing I would like to see is air conditioning. The ocean breeze is nice, but without cross ventilation, (a second window) the room can get stuffy."

"Amazing location!
The guesthouse is located just 5-10 minutes north of Hilo, depending on traffic (morning rush into town will take longer). The views out of Hilo Bay are amazing. It is whale season and every morning we saw dozens of them out in the bay.
Our room (Moana room) was clean but basic. We had a microwave, fridge, toaster, and coffee maker. Fruit and muffins provided.
Not for people with mobility issues as there are steps down and back up to get in and out of the rooms. The driveway is also steep and it can be a challenge to get your vehicle out. The left turn onto the main road to Hilo can be tough as well during heavy traffic and at night with low visibiility.
Overall, great place to stay during a visit to Hilo."

"Great location, bad bed
The location here is absolutely gorgeous! The property is set on a hill that overlooks the ocean, where whales frequent! We were able to see whales right from the patio area in front of our room! The property has no AC, which we anticipated, but the only way to get air in the room is by leaving the screen slider open, with no way to lock it, which made me a little uneasy. The room would get very warm during the day, but thankfully, it cooled off fairly quickly once said door was open. The room was super cute & we loved the decorations, but the mattress and pillows were *awful.* It felt like we were sleeping on cement it was so firm (and the pillows were the same). They also provided a tasty breakfast each morning, which we really enjoyed. There was so much to love about this open-air property! If they update the mattress & pillows, we would definitely return."

"Beautiful property with amazing views!
My husband and I stayed in the Moana room for two nights. I loved the fresh beachy decor of the room and everything was extremely clean. We enjoyed the breakfast left for us every morning of fruit, hard boiled eggs, yogurt and muffins.
The views from our room were breathtaking! On New Year's Eve we could see fireworks going off all around the bay. During the day we were able to watch the surfers down below.
The property managers were very helpful and friendly. I loved everything about this vacation rental and would highly recommend it."

"Gorgeous
The location was great. Very close to Hilo town center but right on the water with beautiful tropical scenery. We enjoyed waking up to see dolphins swimming off shore. The one downside would be that the room would get a bit hot at night because there isn't A/C, and wasn't much of a breeze coming in from the window. "

We had a fantastic stay at Hale Kai Suites. The Moana Room was lovely! The views were unbeatable! The pool was refreshing and the hot tub (and the view of Hilo from it) were luxury!!
The in room breakfast was perfect, especially the Papaya on the 2nd day!! Honolii was "home away from home" through my childhood and it was wonderful to get to experience a stay on this road, with these views, one more time.
My only issue was there were some problems with Hot Water. It would occasionally take a long time to warm up (15+ min) but this was not always. "

"One of the best vacations ever!
Do not hesitate to stay at this lovely BNB. It was our first time in Hilo and the hospitality was perfect! Lovely breakfast in the morning on your own private patio over looking the ocean. The pool was perfect and hot tub even better. The grounds the BNB are on is like a tropical garden. I made so many snail and Gecko friends! You might even be lucky enough to see dolphins swimming in the bay. In my personal opinion it's the best BNB on the big island. Can't wait to stay again! "

Great location to downtown Hilo, beautiful view and landscaping, good variety of breakfast items, and spacious room. My boyfriend and I both thought the bed was extremely stiff and the pillows could use an upgrade. We originally wanted to reserve the Bamboo room but it was reserved for 1 of the nights of our stay. We would stay again for the price."

"Incredible Stay in Hilo, Hawaii
This place is a gem!! If you need somewhere to stay in Hilo this is it. Incredible ocean view, with sunrise every morning. We were there for whale season and had whale watching every morning with sunrise. Breakfast is simple but very fresh. Rotating local fruits and pastries. Was perfect for us. Hot tub and pool are a nice addition. Great location to all things on the East side, 45 min to Volcano park, it's on the Hamakua highway which was a great day exploring, close to Maunakea, etc, it's just great. We would stay again 100%. "

So close to Hilo, but not in the middle of everything! Loved the pool, hot tub, and ocean views. The room was clean and comfortable. Because the rooms are close together and accessed by a common walkway, they are not very private. Otherwise, great accommodations for the price. "

"42nd Anniversary
We very much enjoyed the location and amenities. Quiet and fantastic ocean views from patio. Service was top notch from Jen, as she asked each day what food items we preferred. Jen is very busy working every day during our 5 day stay.
The jacuzzi required servicing and the response time was fast for an electrician to arrive. Unfortunately the repair required additional days to fix.
We will stay here again!

"Great Stay
We enjoyed our stay in the Moana Room. It was clean and comfortable. The continental breakfast delivered to our room each day was very nice. There were enough dishes (plates, cereal bowls, coffee cups, glasses and utensils) for the two us. However, there are no sharp knives if you would like to cut up fresh fruit. Do know that you must leave the sliding door and curtains open to your room cool and guests staying in adjacent rooms walk directly in front of your room. And there are small bamboo barriers on the patio between the rooms. So there is not a lot privacy. I believe all of the rooms were being used when we were there. However, guests respected one another and quiet. "

"Clean updated room with a gorgeous view!
My husband and I really enjoyed our stay. The building and rooms appear to be updated and well maintained (for the most part). The room we stayed in (Moana) was very clean and fully equipped with everything we needed. It was a bit warm at times without A/C (warmer than we expected), but we enjoyed cooling off in the pool, and the property manager kindly provided us with an extra fan which helped. The views from our room were spectacular! We watched the sunrise every morning with our coffee and enjoyed watching the surfers at the adjacent beach. Also, some delicious breakfast items were provided every morning (bread, butter, jam, fresh fruit, oatmeal, hard boiled eggs, etc.) which was a pleasant surprise. Would definitely recommend for those who don’t get easily overheated. My hubby and I learned our lesson though and will require accommodations with A\C in the future.
Note: a few minor maintenance issues... Our screen door constantly came off the track and also had a rip in it where bugs could get in. I’d recommend replacing. Also, the hot tub needed a touch more chlorine... it was starting to look a bit green towards the end of our stay. The pool was immaculate though."

"The way it works today, this place is not a B&B anymore
I made a detailed explanation of why i am very disappointed with my stay but it doesn't fit in 2000 characters.
You decided to keep this place named as a B&B, but it is an outrage. This place is basically handled like a hotel with no-one at the front desk. And that's incredibly frustrating when you think you booked a B&B.
The level of service is FAR from what is given by real B&Bs on the island.
The breakfast proposed is a joke and shows very well how the new owner is trying to save money. The "covid card" is then very convenient but nobody buys it. The poor service is really about cost savings because even if noone is living here, someone could be hired to serve a decent breakfast in the morning, like it is the case in a REAL B&B.
In the end the staff is given to handle this place without having the proper tools to do so correctly.
Indeed, contrary to a real B&B no-one is available and it's IMPOSSIBLE to reach the people in charge by phone. When we finally get them on the phone they make mistake after mistake and everything takes forever because first they handle everything remote and second it seems the communication doesn't work either with the person handling things onsite, i.e. the cleaning lady.
Worst above all, after i expressed my desire to leave, i was first proposed for a reimbursement of the nights i would not spend, and after i left i was told i would not be reimbursed anymore. I had to throw threats and raise my tone to get what was initially promised to me. Who does that ? How can people with no moral values be in charge ?
The place is very nice, well decorated, perfectly located, has everything to be outstanding but this is not a B&B.
If you continue calling it so, you will meet many angry customers like us. Especially people coming from Europe who will (contrary to local customers) dare telling you what they really think.
Just put the rooms on AirB&B and then there will be no bad surprises and it would "

"Beautiful stay
We had an amazing time here at this B&B. The Moana room was comfortable and spacious, the view was absolutely gorgeous, it felt private even when other renters were present in the other units. We didn’t think we would use the pool much but it was very nice in the evenings. If it was sunnier while we were there I would have loved to use it in the mornings as well. I love the sound of the waves and coqui frogs. The host was very responsive to our needs. The location of the B&B was perfect for what we were doing, close to town but also a good location for exploring the upper coast. There is no air conditioning but at night there was plenty of breeze through the windows. If we return to Hilo we would definitely stay here again. "
