"Very beautiful, but not relaxing.
Firstly, the house is beautiful, the gardens lovely and the views of the ocean and nearby hills are wonderful. We appreciated the expansive windows which allow for great views from every room. The deck was a great place to relax after an active day.

However, there are two issues to be aware of: 1) there is no hot water and 2) the coqui frogs make a lot of noise at night.

Throughout our 1 week stay, the "hot" water temperature was in the range of about 93 to 98 F. This made for very short and uncomfortable showers.
Our complaints about the lack of hot water were met with prompt action from Salt Water Vacations. But, none of the actions cured the problem, which apparently results from the use of a solar hot water heater for which the electrical backup heater's thermostat is simply set much too low. By mid week we had deduced that this was the problem and informed Salt Water, but they never sent out anyone who could adjust the thermostat to a proper temperature, which for a solar backup should be about 115 F. Perhaps the owners are environmentally conscious (a good thing), but have gone a bit overboard in their efforts to conserve energy. We live part time on Kauai and are also environmentally conscious, having a similar solar hot water heater with electric heater backup. So we are very familiar with that type of system.

As to the frogs, we were totally unaware of this problem, which doesn't exist (yet) on Kauai. Since experiencing those frogs on the Big Island, we've learned that on Kauai aggressive action is taken to find and remove any such frogs when they do appear. Similar attempts to control the frogs have failed on the Big Island (at least near this rental house)."

"Relaxing Gardens (Hilo)
Great property: very clean, comfortable, quiet area, beautiful sea views, and stars at night. All you need for cooking, going to the beach, and having a great family vacation. Highly recommended."

"Lovely location with a great view
The rental is about 25 miles outside of Hilo, which was perfect for our group. The house has a beautiful front porch that overlooks the ocean and is the perfect way to start your day with a cup of coffee or end your day looking at the stars. The house has some additional supplies that were super helpful: beach chairs, coolers, snorkel gear to name a few things. The management company provided a very informative binder with details specific to the area which was super helpful. The rental was as advertised - overall a great experience. "

"Absolutely special
I have been coming to the Big Island for several weeks at a time for the past fifteen years so I have some experience with rental properties. I have always utilized in the past with varied experiences and never went through a private Rental company such as Salt Water before. The description, images and explanation of the home were absolutely correct- the only surprises we had were how much we loved this home. Relaxing Gardens is a spacious and very private plot in a lovely rural neighborhood on the trade wind coast-- we never needed air conditioning, just fresh sea breeze all day and night. The rain on this level of the coast is present, but stayed very reliable to the late afternoons and overnight which was a change from Hilo central. And OMG the stars were incredible. The location is also fabulous for adventures-- you are essentially equidistant from the best activities on the island. It is remote, but the Island is all the more accesible because of it. I never saw a single bug in the house (thanks to their expert care and the gecko friends), and everything was up to date and pristine. We enjoyed resourcing our food at local markets and cooked essentially every meal in the perfectly stocked kitchen and charcoal grill. I also have to say, the Best water pressure in anyplace I've stayed on Big I which was so nice. I will definitely be contacting Salt Water for all of our stays in the future. Mahalo! "

"Comfort and Quiet with Majestic Views
The views here can't be overstated. From most rooms and deck we were blown away regularly looking through the many large windows. At night, we could see an incredible amount of stars in every direction.
The home was very comfortable, clean and with any amenity we could have hoped for. The kitchen was well outfitted and there was even a rolling cooler available for our convenience.
There were two large bedrooms upstairs with a large shared bath, which included a washer and dryer. Downstairs was an open concept, with dining room and living room. As well the downstairs had a private bedroom with a bathroom and it's own side porch. Plenty of seating inside and out.
This was our first visit to the Big Island and we booked half of it on the Hilo side and half on the Kona side. The plan was to explore and we were perfectly located for just that. The home is located about 25 minutes from Hilo, 45 from Waipo Valley and about an hour from the Volcano Park. Although we worried about being too remote, it didn't feel that way at all ultimately. Within 5 minutes of us was an excellent general store with great prepared food and hot food/pizza etc. They even have music many days of the week.
Although it rained sometimes periodically, there was nothing like ongoing downpours.
All in all, the home "

"Perfect stay on the Hilo side
My family and I have been vacationing on the Big Island for over 30 years and have always stayed on the west side of the island in Kona or Waikoloa. We tried this rental on the east side for the first time. We’ve all agreed we will be staying on the east side and, hopefully, in this home from now on. It’s the most aptly titled rental. It truly is a relaxing garden. The home and gardens are magnificent. The sunrises from the front lanai are amazing. There is a little general store with a bar and restaurant about 4 miles away, otherwise you have a very isolated feel. Hilo is only about 35 mins away. There is a nice oceanfront park about 2 mikes away where we snorkeled, played frisbee, and explored tidal pools everyday. This was absolutely our best Hawaii experience ever. "

"Truly an Amazing Place
This house & property is one of a kind filled with everything you could need. Beautiful home with very comfortable furnishings, linens, & every kitchen appliance/gadget you’d need. We used the BBQ & made wonderful meals. The wrap-around deck & the sunrises were incredible, including a botanical garden. Close to Hilo but so very isolated with truly the most breathtaking ocean views. Convenient to Waimea, Kona, Volcanoes & so many waterfalls. We will absolutely be returning. Mahalo "

"Family trip
We visited this house with our family of five for our first trip to Hawaii. It was perfect for us, with plenty of space, beautiful views from inside and on the deck, and a kitchen we could use to prepare meals. The location is also excellent with good proximity to lots of great hiking and sightseeing. We would definitely come back again."

"Paradise Found!
We’ve stayed at the Fairmont Orchid on the Kona side before but wanted to give the Hilo side a try and found this rental gem! There was clear communication and instructions and we found the house without a problem. The yard and ocean view is spectacular! We spend lots of time sitting outside on the porch with our morning coffee. Kitchen was well stocked and lots of laundry supplies. We didn’t use the beach supplies in the carport closet but such a great extra to have! Hilo was 20 minute drive and the falls were even closer! We stopped by Waimea farmers market on the way to kona one day and it was a beautiful drive. Highly recommend this beautiful rental as it gave us a totally different authentic Hawaiian vibe and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a beautiful rental with spectacular views."

"Hula Festival Getaway
Family of six women had the most relaxing and comfortable stay. This property was just secluded enough to feel as if we were the only family experiencing time in paradise! Loved, Loved, Loved the luxurious landscaping on the property. Sunrise and sunset views of the ocean were amazing."

"PERFECT house, PERFECT host
I am generally queasy about hotels and vacation rentals, but this house changed my mind!
Highlights: super clean. well stocked with EVERYTHING, views from the bedrooms and entire house overlooking the ocean were incredible, loved laying in the hammock to relax. Also lots of beach gear: water shoes, snorkel gear, and chairs hotels
Super clean floors - totally felt comfortable walking around bare foot, which I never do in anyones house.
Walk around the neighborhood was so fun. The clementines that we got permission to pick were just incredible - still thinking about them.
Overall, one of the best places we've ever stayed at and we would definitely go back! Highly recommend. "

"Beautiful home in paradise
The view from this house will make you never want to leave! Honestly, build in at least an extra day into your timeline just to sit on the lanai and watch the trade winds blow through the palm trees. The landscaping is stunning, and there are lemon, lime, and orange trees for fresh picking just outside the back door.

The house itself was clean and had what we needed. The downstairs bedroom/bathroom was perfect for my in laws to not have to climb the stairs. The 2 upstairs bedrooms worked great for us and our 3 kiddos. The view alone from the master bedroom is worth renting this property. There were plenty of linens, and having a washer/dryer at the property was so helpful.

We also made use of the beach chairs and beach towels for our beach days. We didn't use the BBQ grill, but appreciated that there was one for easy dinners after sightseeing. The owner/property manager was responsive and provided all the information we needed before and during our stay. Would definitely recommend this little piece of heaven as a home base for exploring all the Big Island has to offer!"

"A Day in Paradise
Our 50th wedding anniversary trip to Hawaii was perfect. Our stay at this house on the Big Island was amazing. The ocean views from the porch and every room are stunning and we enjoyed the tropical paradise all around us.
Our children and grandchildren joined us and this house was just the ticket, with the three bedrooms, two baths and large open dining and living area which handled handled everyone comfortably. It was stocked with everything we needed.
The property and professionally maintained bounty of tropical flowers, trees, fruit and manicured lawn was awesome. We even saw a rainbow and enjoyed stargazing as the kids pointed out their favorite constellations.
Located next door to Laupahoehoe Point, there is easy access to Volcanoes National Park, shopping in Hilo and Kona, numerous beautiful beaches and hiking trails.
The owners of this house are great folks. I recommend this property for your special time in Hawaii. You will not be disappointed."

"Tropical Paradise
Gorgeous! This house truly was a very special part of our vacation. We woke up every morning to a breathtaking oceanscape and went to bed every night after taking in an unobstructed view of the stars. The house and grounds are very well kept, clean and well stocked. We had all the kitchen utensils, towels and bedding we needed. While inside the home is lovely and comfortable, the outside is a tropical paradise full of a variety of flowers, fruit and nut trees, and an enormous mango tree. The grounds were so beautiful, we took the opportunity to do some high school Senior pictures of our daughter outside. When we weren’t relaxing on the front porch in the hammock, we were experiencing as much of the Big Island as we could. The location of this house is very convenient for exploring both sides of the island. Short day trips took us to Volcanoes National Park, black sand beaches, white sand beaches, even a green sand beach. There were plenty of great hikes close to the house with a variety of terrains and amazing views of the ocean, waterfalls, and rivers. From exploring the nearby farmer’s market to wandering around a local art gallery to eating a traditional Hawaiian meal at a unique restaurant, opportunities to experience Hawaiian food and culture were not far away. The owners of this house are wonderful people and made sure all our needs were met. We could not have enjoyed our stay more!"
