Imagine a summer of bliss, swimming from the dock at high tide, or from the sandy beach at low tide, when you stay at Annisquam Singing Pines. Or easily paddle to one of the nearby islands or to Wingaersheek Beach for a day in the sand and surf.

Annisquam Singing Pines is situated on over an acre of waterfront land and has lovely gathering spaces both inside and out. It was built as the waterfront vacation home of Governor Bates, who was the governor of Massachusetts at the turn of the 20th century.

On the huge lawn, you can have a friendly game of football or croquet (in the spirit of the era of the house), or sit in the shade on one of the screened or open porches and watch the river flow by. There are several peaceful spots around the property for guests to enjoy the lively boat activity on the river and take in the breathtaking sunsets. For the full river experience, ask us about renting a Kayak or Stand-Up Paddleboard through Atlantic Vacation Homes.

"Singing Pines
Lovely location atop a steep bluff to watch the boaters glide by, a dock to moor our raft, and calm low tide for morning swims. The house has old world charm and, while not updated, had plenty of floor space inside and outside on the three porches. We did ask for and received an A/C unit for the bottom floor after being surprised that it is not standard with the property; fans only downstairs. Made the short trip to Rockport for steamed lobsters which we ate on the back porch. The grass was long and bugs were out so bug spray is recommended. Overall, a great first north shore experience."

"Perfect Location with a wonderful view
The house is old but extremely well equipped. The view is the most amazing I ever had. There is a lot of space for a group of eight with places to sit and rest."

"AVH, never again
We arrived on Wednesday, a day before our guests arrived which was fortunate because we had to spend the day cleaning both inside and outside the house. The Windows had obviously not been cleaned in some time and the windowsills each had a collection of dead flies. The porches were dirty and needed cleaning. The lawn must have been mowed after a rain or watering as we found clippings stuck to the siding of the house to a height of about two feet giving the yard and house a sloppy appearance. The small garden at the entrance was full of weeds.. When AVH was apprised of the fact that we spent our first day cleaning the person we spoke with became defensive and suggested we should have asked for their cleaning people to come and clean. Since, we expect they had already been there and left it the way we found it it didn't seem like that would have been helpful. It was mentioned to the AVH representative that we wanted it to look presentable as we would be having a get together for family, some who had travelled from California and New Mexico for our daughter,s wedding. The AVH Rep then informed us tha no parties were allowed on the property without prior approval. This was a post wedding family get together which consisted of about 20 guests eating and talking and took place in the afternoon. There was no music played and it was a quiet gathering. We were charged an extra $500 for this "serious violation" of the contract which is vague in defining how many people can be there. My son in law brought his dog onto the property and we immediately received a phone call informing us that the dog could not be there. My son in law called his parents who arrived a half hour later and removed the dog from the property We were charged $125 for this. The dog never entered the house nor defecated on the property"

"Unique House with Vintage Character
This house is unique and has very special vintage character with modern amenities (A/C, cable, Wifi, microwave). We LOVED the house with the beautiful porches surrounding the home. The views and sunsets are spectacular! Boat traffic was fairly constant and fun to watch. The biggest drawback was the dock. The dock is very old; dangerous with splinters and nail heads sticking up; and needs to be replaced. The owners of the property came and secured a mat (4' by 6')over the lip of the dock surface so my teenagers could pull themselves out of the water onto the dock when swimming at high tide. There are no stairs directly into the ocean and a ladder would not work from the dock with the approximate 5 to 6 foot rise and fall of the tides. Note that the owners keep their Zodiac on the dock. I would not recommend this property for small children. The current on the Annisquam River is very strong and requires strong swimmers. The beach at low tide is full of treasures and fun to explore. We also met the neighbors and they are delightful! Water pressure is lacking for showering in the upstairs bathroom so we showered in the first floor bathroom. There were also ants in the kitchen and living room. We ate every meal on site and the kitchen was not as well appointed as it could have been. We did love the lime green counter tops. With a some modifications, this house is well worth a week's vacation in paradise."

"The Bates Cottage-Singing Pines
This historic home has been beautifully maintained. It is filled with all the charm and history of an old house but has all the modern conveniences. The sunsets over the dock were spectacular. Many places to just sit and wonder at the surroundings. The rental agency went well above expectation--a tote bag of necessities plus a bottle of wine with 2 Singing Pine Glasses. Very easy check in and out with great website. Would highly recommend for a large get together. Beds were very comfortable and the grill was perfect for a late day cookout. Not to be missed the next time in the Gloucester area. Great restaurants in Gloucester and Rockport--especially Rudders, the Gloucester House and My Place by the Sea in Bearskin Neck."
