"Great location, Good Layout, could use some maintenance.
Great location - could watch Whales breaching from the patio. Complex is right on the beach. Free Bus service for 60+ is perk, no car needed. Views from the deck are gorgeous even without whales.
Unit 218 is fine for two people. Unit has deferred maintenance that detracts visually but everything functions well.
Furniture and bed very comfortable, not worn. "

"Right there on the water!
We enjoyed our time in 218 at Hale Kai. The view of the ocean only 100 feet in front of our lanai, and the lit pool at night was beautiful. The kitchen was well stocked for cooking. Just make sure you bring all your own spices, etc. Some of the furnishings and bathroom items would be appreciated if updated, but hey, we sure did enjoy our stay. The full time residences at Hale Kai are delightful. They meet every sundown at the pool and have a conch blowing ceremony to say goodbye to another day. They are a very social group, and corral newbies into their fold. We’d welcome the opportunity to stay there again. "

"It's Paradise!
I could hear the sound of crashing waves opened the doors to the porch and slept to that beautiful music from the first evening.
Hale Kai was neat, clean, and well organized. I especially appreciated the laundry and tips on how to get around the island, including by bus.
I would not want to stay in the same unit again unless it has a serious renovation. Carpets and drapes were very old and dirty and need replacing. Fortunately, I spent most of my time on the lovely porch.

We absolutely love the Hale Kai! This was our 4th time staying here and we will for sure be back! Unit 218 is perfect in every way! Only suggestion is to upgrade the mattress on the sofa sleeper or add a mattress pad. Other than that everything was wonderful! "

We have stayed here before and always enjoy it. As usual everyone that staying at Hale Kai was very friendly and happy! Miss the Conch at 6 pm! But there was a few flaws since our last visit here, the BIG # 1 issue was the TV it was SO difficult to figure out how to use it, (at time we couldn't even watch TV.) Last time we were here it was much easier to use, get rid of Spectrum ( You change TV Co. since we were here last.) The 2nd issue was no one was available in the office but ONE day the whole 8 days we were there.

"Bob & Helene's stay at Hale Kai
Our time spent there was wonderful. We have stayed at many high-end resorts around the world but we probably enjoyed the simple stay at Hale Kai more than those. It was quiet and private with only the guests that were there. Our view was the best. We met some very nice guests. We thought the grounds were well kept and clean. I can't say enough about this location. Parking was easy. Location to the little farmers market was nice and to other stores and places to eat. We watched whales jumping all day from our balcony. The building and rooms seem to be built in the 1970's but our room appears to be upgraded in the kitchen. It is basic so don't expect high resort standards but the location and view and general feel was perfect. The management staff we very nice. We booked for next year already. "

This unit (218) was very well renovated, has a great layout, and was very clean. The property is very well kept and is also in a great location, close to many amenities. It's about a 50-minute walk to Whalers Village. Still need a car to get around the island and for activities, but for basic day to day things, it was perfect.

"Feels Like Home
My husband and I had a wonderful 8 days at Hale Kai, and #218 was perfect for the two of us. The living room furniture and bed were comfortable, the lanai was our favorite spot, and everything was clean and working well. We enjoyed our time onsite, getting to know several Hale Kai condo owners, who were all very friendly and welcoming. Sunset gatherings by the pool were an unexpected treat. Common areas were very well maintained and beautiful. Tidepools at the park next door and the small beach on the other side were great, and we enjoyed some time in the pool. We only rented a car our first and last 24 hours, using the local bus (which runs between Kapalua and Lahaina), Lyft, and a lot of nice walking in between. We recommend Teralani dinner sail out of Whalers Village, Maui Brewing Company (Kahana), and Sea House Restaurant overlooking Napili Bay (after morning snorkeling there). Cheap tip: we chose the $39 cocktail-only seating for Sheraton's (short) luau. We wanted a lot of downtime on this vacation, and having a comfortable, beautiful home base with a gorgeous ocean view made our downtime at least as nice as our adventures. Thank you!"

Hale Kai ended up being a great choice. We have visited Maui several times but this was our first visit to this resort. Fantastic views, sandy beach, sea turtles, snorkeling, easy parking, and walking distance to grocery store, farmers market, shopping, etc. We hope to return next winter!"

This is a great location in the complex and very clean. The unit is dated and could use some TLC. The owner should take a cue from the updating done in Unit 220, which we also rented for our extended family. A coat of white painting and new flooring would be a great place to start. Some new less heavy furniture would be nice. "

He called our room "the hotel" and is still talking about how cool "the hotel" was! We cannot say enough about how much we enjoy staying at Hale Kai and are already discussing our next visit. "Mother/Daughter get away
This was our 2nd stay at Hale Kai in the same unit. As with the 1st time the unit was clean and updated. The location is wonderful right on the ocean...we spent 90% of our time, when not sleeping, on the balcony over looking the ocean. A couple of notes but in no way meant to be complaints but just to help travelers. The unit does not have air conditioning and is on the west so the afternoons can get warm. We found that the ocean breezes helped to eliminate some of the heat and if we were going to be out we closed the drapes. While the bathroom is quite nice it is small with no counter space. But considering the location these were minor inconveniences to us. The people choosing Hale Kai were friendly and considerate. We plan to go back again."

This is a lovely location, right next to a park and across the street from the local Farmers' Market which is there on M, W, and Friday. Within walking distance to local shops and eateries. Pool is good size and there is a small beach if you like to sit in the sand, though when tide comes in the beach is unavailable. Views differ depending on whether you are parkside or ocean front. Small complex, very family oriented with some permanent residents."

"Relaxing Getaway
Our second visit this year should let you know that we like this unit and all that Hale Kai has to offer. Unit is clean and the view is fantastic. Every meal ocean side on our lanai and falling to sleep with the sound of the waves. Nice to be able to walk to the fish market and Times Supermarket as well as the farmer's market. Easy access to the Kanapali walkway. On site manager great, grounds are maintained every day, on-site laundry and communal library. Best of all a small private beach visited almost every day by turtles right out front.

"August 24-30 Hale Kai Visit
Well it was a ok experiance except for the bed being too sloppy and uncomfortable. I was disappointed with having to leave my vacation early due to my mother being very sick in Oregon. I talked with the manager and she would not redound any of my money I paid for another week in 202. This was upsetting to me since I have been coming back home to hale Kai for over 20 years. I was not treated good in this situation and probably will not come back again. "

Wow, what a great place to stay. My daughter and I stayed in 218 for 8 days and had a great time. Beautiful view, loved breakfast on the lanai every morning with such a wonderful view. The patio and pool are very clean and perfect for days you just want to read and relax. Hale kai is situated between a small pleasant beach and a very nice public park: all vacation options are available. The Unit itself is very comfortable, nice comfy bed, good sized bath and pretty well equipped kitchen and relaxing living room. used the blender every day! We would love to stay here again. Only suggestions, although the place is clean, it could use a "deep clean" to get to the mouldings, cabinets etc. Mgt is great, friendly and on top of things. We didn't have a spatula and one was supplied immediately. Very impressed. Grounds are well maintained and washer/dryer/recycling on site!"

We can't say enough good things about Hale Kai. The property is beautiful and well maintained. Our unit was lovely and well equipped with everything we needed. The view is wonderful. We were impressed with the rental office. Valerie is friendly and efficient. Everyone we spoke with was helpful and pleasant. Communication is great. We met many guests who come every year. We won't stay anywhere else on Maui. Honokowai has everything we need within walking distance. If you don't know anyone on Maui, you will have friends here by the time you leave. Just head to the pool at sunset for the almost daily conch blow. "

"A Little Piece of Paradise
This is our 3rd Stay at Hale Kai and it continues to be a great choice for us. You can't get much closer to the ocean. With a natural reef out front for snorkeling, a private sandy beach shared by the property next door and an easy walk to the start of the Kannapali Boardwalk, the location is perfect. There is a great fish shop just down the road as well as Times Supermarket - an easy walk. And of course the turtles out front that occasionally sun on the beach just make it perfect. The unit itself is in good shape, lots of closest space and a dresser so you can unpack your suitcase as well as a dresser in the living room should you have people sleeping on the pull out couch - then they too can unpack their belongs. Have stayed in another unit that was full of artificial palm trees and plants that took up room in the unit, 218 is clutter free so it feels like you have more space. Kitchen had everything we need except for a flipper for pancakes or the grill, but that was easily rectified by borrowing from the neighbor who had 2 and no tea pot. As well it would have been nice to have a few plastic plates for taking snacks to the pool, but that is minor. Eating every meal with an unobstructed view of the ocean, you can't beat it. Wifi worked well. Nice having a laundry room on site. Grounds are well taken care of as is the pool. Two grills were well used and I was happy to see they were cleaned every morning. The office staff were great. I first stayed here in 1978 and I love it still. Every unit at Hale Kai is individually owned so check reviews, to be sure your unit will provide you with the experience you want. 218 was perfect for our vacation and we'll be back."

My husband and I recently had the opportunity to stay at Hale Kai for the 1st time.
Upon arrival, we were so pleased to meet Valerie, she was so friendly and hospitable!
Our condo had a fabulous view, the unit was very clean and had a tropical feeling. The unit and complex were very well maintained. It was a great experience and we felt very much at home during our stay.
We found the location worked well for our base of adventure.
The residents and staff were a pleasure to meet !

"Another Week In Paradise
This was our third stay at the Hale Kai, and we will probably come back! Everything seems very well kept up with, everything worked as it should have. No problems at all. The view from the lanai is priceless. If I had to name anything bad: the noise from the street in the back can sometimes be a little annoying in the morning when you want to sleep in, but maybe we're just not used to it. We always could sleep. All in all: for this price we definitely would recommend it to a friend!"

"Maui - heaven on earth
This was our second time to the Hale Kai #218. Nicely located to everything on the west side. The building and unit is in good working order. The view cannot be matched. Swimming in the pool or on the adjacent beach was clean and soothing. I swam with some turtles right there (do not touch them). The pictures do not lie. Good food and shopping is close by either by walking or a short drive to the larger shopping strips. "

"Perfect location; fantastic facilities
Unit 218 is beautifully renovated with a great shower (shower head & hand-held). The kitchen is lovely and well-appointed with everything you need, including a corkscrew! We stayed early to mid March and thoroughly enjoyed having meals on the lanai while watching the whales putting on a show. The grounds are kept up and the pool area is inviting. The location is perfect because there is a park next door, a fairly private beach on the other side and everything you need for shopping across the street (pretty much): snorkel rental, farmers market, multiple restaurants, Zensations spa (recommend!), grocery store is 15 minute walk away, and a gas station just up the street at ABC. Other condos further north do not have these amenities within walking distance. For the rental cost, you can't go wrong with Hale Kai. Great location, pleasant facilities and a good community (if you wish to join in)."

"Amazing little place
We stayed here in November and truly loved everything about the place. In fact we loved it so much we are returning in May. Unit 218 was clean, well equipped and the view from the lanai is absolutely incredible. We would get up in the morning and take our coffee out on the lanai and just get lost in the beauty and the sound of the ocean. Nice clean pool, barbecues, beach area, and a great market across the street. This place has a nice personal feel about it. It's not like one of those big, stuffy overpriced resorts. We look forward to returning again and again.
Thank you Hale Kai owner, staff and management. Will recommend this place to friends, but not too many friends and we don't want it to get to popular."

We had a 2nd floor condo which came equipped with everything we needed to cook our own meals or not.Valerie in the office was awesome and made sure that everything was just right for our stay. Magnificent view from the lanai, with the exception of the heat and glare from the sun in the afternoon. Also the noise from vehicles up and down the road disturbed our sleep. Tastefully decorated with a very comfortable bed. Furnished like a hotel suite rather than a vacation rental. The 2 electric fans were helpful in addition to the ceiling fans.

This is our 4th year at Hale Kai, and our 2nd in unit #218. We love watching the whales from our deck. This year we saw a school of spinner dolphins. It doesn't get more relaxing than this!
Unit 218 is great - the bed is very comfortable, the shower is roomy, the stove is newer so the burners are level (this wasn't our experience in one of the other units in the complex). There are only a couple small problems: the microwave is inside one of the cabinets, using the only accessible storage available in the kitchen. So, we were creative with storing our groceries. It would be nice to have a bit more flatware, so that when friends come for dinner we don't have to hand wash the flatware we used earlier in the day. These are not deal breakers ... We love this unit!"
