Rockport was established in 1870 as a shipping port for cattle and has since been recognized as an ideal spot for fishing and relaxation. Sitting along the Texas Tropical Trail, it enjoys warm but tolerable summers, 60s and 70s in the winter, and a reliable island breeze to top it all off. It's become notable as an ideal location for fishing, water sports, and bird watching. In addition, nearby Port Aransas and Corpus Christi also have a lot to offer. Rockport is easily accessible from Corpus Christi International Airport, and is only a short drive away. It sits comfortably between Copano Bay and Aransas Bay, both renowned sites for all types of fishing.
What to Do in Rockport
Rockport offers plenty to get into, from fishing and water sports to historical sites to art galleries and everything in between. The landmark of the area is the Fulton Mansion, now open for tours, used to house one of the wealthiest cattle ranchers in all of Texas, and has been remarkably well preserved. The Rockport beach is well populated and very clean and great for kids as well, as shallow water extends for some distance and waves do not get too big. The town also boasts its own maritime museum which has history dating back to Spanish exploration, The Rockport Harbor Aquarium, a quaint local art gallery, various parks, and a lovely selection of antique shopping in and around the Fulton historical district. Above all- Rockport is a fisherman's paradise, with a variety of potential catches that never ceases to surprise, and opportunities for bay fishing, wading, beach fishing, pier fishing, as well as deep sea fishing tours or dolphin and whale watching.
What to Eat
Having done a good bit of traveling, I can tell you that for a seafood lover, it doesn't get much better than South Texas. With its stylistic blend of good old southern cooking, Tex-Mex, and Cajun influences, you can always bet on South Texas seafood. If that doesn't suit you- remember that Rockport was founded as a cattle port- and its steaks show for it. Seafood is the main fare, however, and you'll find it in abundance. You can always count on a big portion and fresh caught fish, shrimp, and oysters. A local favorite is Paradise Dockside Bar & Grill, where you'll likely eat the day's catch as you watch boats come in and out. For a real seafood feast, try out The Boiling Pot Restaurant, where you can find a platter of seafood piled high and made for eating with hands.
