Visit the old town of La Isabela, known as the first settlement of Europeans in the New World. The first settler was non other than Christopher Columbus in 1494. But after several strong hurricanes, the small city was abandoned. Several centuries lates, the town was rediscovered and great archaeological finds are now here for you to see at the La Isabela Archaeological Museum. Another great attraction of La Isabela is the Temple of Las Americas, or Sanctuary of Jesus Christ the Evangelizer, which was the first Catholic church on American soil. This small church is a beautiful reconstruction built on the ruins of the old one. In it you can admire some relics and religious images of great beauty.
The Puerto Plata province is along the northern coast of the Dominican Republic. To the north, it has the Atlantic Ocean; to the east, the Espaillat province; to the south, the Santiago and Valverde provinces; and to the west, the Monte Cristi province. As of 2016, the total estimated propulation of the Puerto Plata province is 329,482 inhabitants. The largest city of the province is San Felipe de Puerto Plata, with an urban population (in 2010) of 118,496 inhabitants.

These mountains have a humid tropical climate with an average temperature of 26 C / 79 F, which is great for hiking. Although the town was established in 1946, its history goes back to the 17th century. Just a few decades ago, there was no electricity here and most of the roads were not paved. Because accessing Las Terrenas was difficult, its virgin state was preserved. Doesn't that intrigue you? The town has been developing slowly with bars, restaurants and shopping. Las Galeras is another charming town with magnificent tropical beaches. Fun fact: The name of the town comes from the two galleys, sent by the King of Spain to curtail illegal trade, as pirates often frequented the town during the second half of the 16th century. If scuba diving among unspoiled coral reefs is your idea of fun, take a boat to the isolated beaches of Madama or Fronton.
Cayo Arenas is a tiny island off the northern coast that barely exists as it is only a tenth of an acre. Totally undeveloped, except for a few thatched roof huts, you can enjoy spectacular snorkeling in the calm, turquoise lagoon and see many a curious Caribbean fish. Its nickname is "Paradise Island", as it is truly a place right out of your tropical dreams. How to get to such a remote place? It is a 20 minute boat ride from the Punta Rucia beach, which is 1-1/2 hrs west of Puerto Plata.
