Dauphin Island Most Fun Things to Do:
-
Explore the Historic Fort Gaines - The well-preserved ramparts of Fort Gaines have guarded the entrance to Mobile Bay for more than 150 years. Now a historic site, the Fort stands at the eastern tip of Dauphin Island where it commands panoramic views of the bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The Fort was recently designated as one of the Eleven Most Endangered Historic Sites in America due to on-going shoreline erosion
- Surround Yourself with Nature - Watch the migrating
birds drop in for a visit in the 137 acres of the Audubon Bird Sanctuary. Discover butterflies, fish, unique fauna and even an alligator throughout the maritime forest, marshes, and dunes, which include a lake, a swamp, and a beach. The three mile trail system within the Sanctuary has been designated as a National Recreational Trail and the Dauphin Island Park & Beach Board has made a commitment to the environmental stewardship of these parklands. The decisions we make today can impact the environment our grandchildren are surrounded by in the future.
- Enjoy Sparkling Sand and Cool Surf - Dauphin Island Public Beach showcases some of the island's most beautiful landscapes. In addition to the beach itself, visitors can enjoy a variety of nearby trails, parks, and historical exhibits. The Dauphin Island Public Beach is unique among beaches in the area since it is pet-friendly. Dauphin Island is known for having some of the most stunning natural resources and landscapes in Mobile County and the Park & Beach Board makes these resources accessible at a low cost to citizens and visitors. In an effort to protect the fragile environment, visitors are asked to pay fees between $2 and $5 for access to the beach and surrounding facilities during the high season. Dauphin Island Public Beach is open daily year-round from 8 AM to 6 PM. Every visit to one of our parks is an opportunity for the entire family to learn and interact with natural and cultural history of Dauphin Island. The Board's parks, beaches, trails, exhibits, and other amenities complement and broaden the visitor's experience to Dauphin Island.
- Discover Engaging Sea Life Exhibits at the Estuarium / Dauphin Island Sea Lab! - This public Aquarium is an exciting educational venue highlighting the four key habitats of coastal Alabama: the Mobile Tensaw River Delta, Mobile Bay, the Barrier Islands, and the Northern Gulf of Mexico. It includes the 10,000 square foot Exhibit Hall, a 7,000-gallon stingray touch pool, and the Living Marsh Boardwalk. This facility has 31 aquariums totaling over 30,000 gallons with more than 100 species on display. The Aquarium showcases the plants, animals, and other natural resources found in the estuary and its surrounding marine habitats. Through beautiful visual exhibits and engaging interactive exhibits, the aquarium will leave you with a broader understanding of the interactions that take place in Mobile Bay, the fourth largest estuary system in the United States.
