About the Island
Located in southwest Florida, the quaint Captiva Island offers beaches that are truly captivating. This is the land where clear blue skies meet sparkling azure waters and sugar-white beaches. And the best part? From virtually anywhere that you stand on Captiva Island, you are never more than a five minute walk from the costline and the serene ocean water.
Stroll the soft fluffy sand of Captiva's shores after high tide for the pime time to pack your pockets full of colorful seashells and sun-bleached sand dollars - shelling on Captiva Island is among the nation's best!
Captiva offers a host of water activities, including kayaking or boating through nearby channels (you may get lucky and catch a glimpse of jumping dolphins or a manatee surfacing for a gulp of air!)
At dusk, grab your favorite cocktail and get set to watch some of the vibrant sunsets Captiva is known for. It is no wonder that Dr. Beach (a.k.a. Dr. Stephen Leatherman) named Captiva Island the most romantic beach destination two years in a row!
Captiva Island got its name from a time when the island was used to holding pirate Jose Gaspar's victims for ransom. Pirate past aside, a vacation on Captiva Island puts you right up there with some of the nation's more beloved historical characters. With his wife Anne beside him in the cockpit, Charles Lindbergh landed his plane on Captiva Island's undeveloped shores and Teddy Roosevelt occasionally dipped his toes in the Captiva waters.
Today, no matter if your idea of a vacation is sitting with a good book on the sand or hiking the waters on an eco-tour, Captiva has it! Even Captiva's gourmet bistros and luxury resorts don't ditract from the island's enchanting simplicity. With a laid-back yet refined collection of inns, hotels, Bed and Breakfasts, and resorts, Captiva Island is somehow both upscale and down-to-earth, attracting world-famous tourists and your average vacationer alike.
Other activities to try while on your Captiva Island vacation:
- Get up with the sun and use the early mornings, just after the morning tide, for shelling. While all of Captiva Island's beaches are well-stocked, Turner Beach waves usually bring in the best loot.
- Sail, kayak, or boat along the mangrove-lined coast, cruise around Captiva's out-islands, and tour the nearby waterways; several marinas and liveries are available on the island for rentals and docking. If you'd rather sit back and be driven, sunset and dolphin watching cruises are popular local Captiva options.
- Captiva is known for its great bird-watching! so pack your binoculars for a shot at seeing the island's blue herons, roseate spoonbills, egrets, pelicans, eagle, and osprey abound. With 6,400 acres of marshes, seagrass, and mangrove forest, Captiva Island's Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge is one of the best places to have a birdwatching eco-adventure.
- If you'r looing to catch that perfect wave, surfers generally recommend the area around Redfish Pass for the most consistent swells.
- Turner Beach near Redfish Pass is also a great local's fishing spot. To snag mackerel, mullet, pompano, flounder, cobia or drum you can also try three other popular Captiva fishing holes: The Causeway, Blind Pass Bridge and the bayside pier at the Sanibel Lighthouse. Of course, Captiva Island also offers plenty of deep-sea charters to take you out into the blue beyond.
- Visit The Island Store to pick up virtually anything you need right here on the island. Conveniently located in the Village Center, this quaint store is well-stocked with all of the necessities and has been serving residents and visitors for decades. Fresh produce and deli counter add to the charm of this old-timey grocery. Parking never seems to be a problem, maybe because those staying in the Village Center can just as easily walk. Regardless of what you might need, chances are the Captiva Island Store has it... this is where the "locals" shop! Open 7 days a week!
- Hit up Jim's Rentals offers bicycles, scooters, floats, in-line skates, snorkling gear, waverunners (in proper season), and just about anything else you could want to have a fun-filled day on Captiva. Plus they have basic necessities for more passive enjoyment, like beach umbrellas and chairs. Stop by to see all the cool activities and toys.
