Description

Our three bedroom beachfront home is located on Ambegris Caye, the largest & northmost island off the coast of Belize, about five miles north of San Pedro.

It’s “out front”-- directly on the water with an unobstructed 180-degree view up and down the beach. It shares a beautifully landscaped private 20’ x 40’ fresh water pool detailed in tile and stone that match those found in the house. The house is a two-story structure with tiled roof and stucco walls framed and accented in Belizean hardwood, almost exclusively mahogany. The full time gardener/groundskeeper makes sure that the house remains well integrated into the natural environment of this one-time coconut plantation that’s still dotted with both mature and younger palms.

Layout
The first floor consists of three bedrooms. Two bedrooms face the water, each with a queen size bed, a full bath—brightly tiled, double sink basins-- and a private entrance out to the terrace facing the ocean. The north bedroom bathroom has a large step-in tiled “garden” shower area, which looks out onto a garden within a privacy fence.

The rear bedroom has two single beds with frames specially constructed so that the beds push together and form a king without a mattress gap. It has a half bath and its own private entrance out to the pool or outside shower just around the corner. Each bedroom is individually air conditioned (as is the upstairs Great Room) should one desire, but the breeze off the water and each room’s ceiling fan keeps the air fresh and cool.

The upstairs features a Great Room with a vaulted hardwood ceiling and a covered terrace that runs the full length of the house—large enough to accommodate both a luxurious hammock and furniture for lounging or lunch, and a perfect place to soak up the panoramic ocean view.

From the terrace you can easily see the reef that runs all along the coast of Belize—just a few hundred yards offshore-- which makes for calm water at the shore, and some of the best diving, snorkeling, and fishing in the hemisphere.

Amenities

The Great Room contains three areas—a full kitchen, a dining area, and a sitting area, decorated with artful handmade dining chairs, original paintings, and Guatemalan antiquities. The kitchen is fully equipped—large refrigerator, four burner range & oven, dishwasher, microwave, trash compactor, blender, ice cream maker, etc.

The dining area easily seats eight and the sitting area features two chairs and two coaches—one a comfortable sleeper coach that creates a fourth sleeping area. The Great Room also has its own full bath, and contains the stereo, CD player, television, VCR, satellite TV box, and DVD player. We’ve begun a small library of CD and DVD titles—you may even be inspired to make your own contribution to the music or movies you’d want to have on a beautiful tropical island! A microwave phone line provides connection to the Belize phone network. High speed wired or wireless internet access via the Direcway satellite system lets you respond to email or surf the web from the hammock.

Although the house's kitchen is very well equipped, there are other options if you don't feel like cooking. There are three restaurants in walking distance, including the one that most people consider the best on the island. In addition a provisioning service will also provision the house in advance of your arrival with both raw ingredients-- dry goods, fruits & vegetables, wine, beer, dairy, meat, poultry, etc, and ready-to-serve meals like jerk chicken, pan fried snapper, shrimp creole, and chicken & sausage jambalaya.

Activities
Ambergris Caye has a wide range of excursion, tour, and adventure providers all of whom will pick up and drop off at the pier in front of the house, so one can be very active and adventurous, or lounge by the pool with a good book and a cool drink. There are several resort spas with great massage available if you want to be pampered.

We have very good local management who can provide guidance and assistance with travel plans, booking activities and excursions, and the local who/what/where that's always helpful.

In addition to a wide range of diving, fishing and snorkeling sites, activities include wildlife tours, visits to Mayan ruins, cave tubing, birding, biking, kayaking, windsurfing, sailing and parasailing. There are a number of expert excursion providers who will tailor an enjoyable experience to your wishes—a half day snorkeling & beachcombing boat trip with a lunch stop for a beach grilled snapper lunch, a day of fishing, a nature trip to see manatees, howler monkeys or tropical birds, a boat trip to another nearby caye—enough diversity to appeal to almost every taste.

Diving and fishing bring many visitors to island and that results in very high quality diving and fishing resources. Dive providers offer everything from and easy resort certification course in shallow water to deep water Nitrox dives and everything in between. There are dozens of reef dive spots and several world-class atolls just off shore including Cousteau’s infamous Blue Hole.

Fishing ranges from shallow flats fly fishing—great bonefish and permit-- to spin casting for snapper & grouper to deep sea big fish like tarpon outside the reef. The island boasts a very experienced group of fishing guides who have spent a lifetime exploring the waters around Ambergris.

Whether you’re interested in doing little or a lot Ambergris Caye is a great vacation destination and Calm Caye has the perfect balance-- easy access to activities and a relaxing, peaceful environment.

Rates
Our rate for the house-- $370 USD/evening-- includes maid service, and transportation to/from the airport in San Pedro as well as use of our Ocean Kayaks “Cabo”, a 2-4 person sit-on-top kayak that’s ideal for a quick paddle out to the reef directly in front of the house (where the snorkeling is surprisingly good), or just to explore the shoreline. Belize accommodation tax is an additional 9%.
