After a day of sun and surf, take a walk or paddle boat ride around the lake, or let the kids play on the playground there. Outdoor movies are shown at the lake at dusk every Sunday night in the summertime!

Carolina Beach has a movie theater, local shops, drugstores, neighborhood coffee shops, bait shops, variety stores, delicious restaurants, and grocery stores if you want to cook at home. You can fish from the pier, surf cast, or experience sport fishing from a number of charter boats located in the municipal yacht basin. If the adults want a little night life, enjoy an evening on one of the local party boats, or have a drink at one of the local watering holes.

For those few rainy days, visit the Fort Fisher Acquarium just 3 miles away, The largest aquarium in NC (the kids will love the touch tank!)

Or how about a ferry ride over to the adorable neighboring fishing village of Southport for Lunch on the waters edge.

Take a short drive across the bridge and check out Tregembo Animal Park.

You can also drive 20 minutes to get to the nearby city of Wilmington. Home of Dawson's Creek, and now, One Tree Hill. Here you can tour the Screen Gems movie studios and see the sets of some of your favorite TV shows and movies.

Take the kids downtown to the newly renovated Cape Fear Children's Museum!

And if you're all feeling really brave, hit the Cape Fear Serpentarium Museum!

After visiting the zoo, the parents may want to stroll around downtown Wilmington and check out the historic mansions, have some fabulous seafood at Dock St. Oyster Bar, or have tea outside on the river at The Wilmington Tea Room.

Or maybe just shop at the Cotton Exchange!

For the history buffs in your family, cross the Cape Fear Bridge and check out the NC Battleship:

If you drive to the other end of Wilmington, you'll find many more shopping destinations as well as great restaurants. Wilmington is frequently listed as having some of the best restaurants in the nation! Or if you feel like doing more shopping sans children, you can drop the kids off at Giggles Drop In Childcare and shop at Mayfaire Town Center!
